*James Elmer Helton*
James Elmer Helton was born on June 30, 1939, in Garrard County Kentucky. The youngest of 12 children born to Elisha and Lizzie Helton, James would continue to live on the family farm until his mother’s death in 1944. In the following years, James would grow and live with his Father in Kentucky and later in Tampa Florida. Upon his Father’s death in 1981 James lived with family members including sister Stella Tankersley and sister Bessie Hawkins. James moved to Ohio and entered into the MRDD program for disabled and handicap citizens where he lived a good and happy life in spite of his many handicaps.
A “Special Thank you” to Highest Expectations, Joan Stevens and her excellent staff, for the wonderful care they gave James for the last eleven years of his life. James was tremendously fond of everyone and viewed them as family. Many adventures such as vacations to Disney World, flying on an airplane for the first time, lunching with Astronauts at NASA, trips to Dollywood and Gatlinburg were fun and fulfilling times spent with Joan and her staff.
James final days were spent at Lebanon Healthcare Center where he was getting to know everyone by wheeling himself down the halls introducing himself door to door. He quickly became a favorite of several of the staff. According to all published information, James would be considered the oldest and longest living person with Downs Syndrome ever recorded.
